The Alsace air quality monitoring station network managed by the Association for the Surveillance and Study of Atmospheric Pollution in Alsace (ASPA) was set up on the basis of successive criteria. It is configured to meet the requirements of the European directives, the national information needs (ATMO index,...) and forecasting (especially for population alerts) for regulated pollutants and the explicit expression — requests — or implicit — challenges — of special needs (especially for unregulated pollutants). The fixed-site analyser fleet allows continuous 24-hour measurement of sulphur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM 10 and PM 2.5), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), mercury (Hg), and airborne radioactivity. Benzene (C6H6) is measured by passive sampling systems at the Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Colmar sites, while polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, nickel, etc.) are measured using active sampling systems.
