This dataset gather the description of primary occurrences of African palms across the entire African continent. The database holds around 4400 specimen of which 3408 have sufficient geographical locality descriptions and are thus georeferenced. This number includes specimen recognised to the genus level out of which 4286 specimen are identified to species level. The database is assembled from many different data sources: herbarium specimen, transect/plot data, literature surveys, observations by field-botanists and occurrences derived from searches on Google Earth. The data has been meticulously checked for any taxonomic errors as well as wrongful georeferences and these have subsequently been corrected.
