Biosphere Reserves are internationally recognised areas of ecosystems or a combination of terrestrial and coastal/marine ecosystems. As part of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB), biosphere reserves are established to promote a balanced relationship between human beings and the biosphere.A biosphere reserve consists of three areas: a central zone, a buffer zone, a transition zone.Biosphere reserves, most often their central areas, are based on pre-existing protected areas (natural reserves, national parks, regional natural parks...). They may therefore correspond to a geographical object already covered by another layer belonging to the Protected Natural Spaces (ENP) in order to achieve specific objectives for the conservation of the natural heritage.
