The prefect appoints for a fixed period the lieutenants of louveteries and determines the territories assigned to them (CE L 427-1 and Order of 14 June 2010 NOR: DEVN1013973A) These territories may be sub-communal. Wolves are a hunt for wolves and other large pests for destruction. The Prefect shall decide by order on the collective destruction of pests. He appoints, for a period of 5 years, lieutenants of the workers who will manage these collective destruction under the control of the departmental direction of the territories. The number of lieutenants is determined according to the area, afforestation and terrain of the department. These lieutenants are the administrative technical advisors on wildlife management issues. This function was created in the 9th century by Charlemagne, with the main objective of protecting populations from wolves.
Today, they are voluntary agents of the State, who receive no salary or compensation:
all expenses (fuel, ammunition, pack maintenance, mandatory uniform...) are at their expense.
Appointed by the prefect of the department after selection on file and interview, they are 5 lieutenants of louveterie in Eure-et-Loir, who are mainly involved in the regulation of wild boars, rabbits and crows, where the action of hunters is not sufficient or impossible.
They also act to capture deer trapped in closed properties and to regulate invasive species (Canada’s Bernache).
