In response to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, the Water and Aquatic Environments Act of 30/12/06 strengthened the
control of diffuse pollution from agricultural sources through the creation of protection zones for catchment feeding areas. The implementation of this new resource protection system leads to the delineation of catchment foraging areas (sometimes also referred to as catchment feeding basins or LACs) that include AAFC protection areas.
The protection zone is defined by crossing the mapping zoning of intrinsic vulnerability and zoning of agricultural pressures.
In the case of surface water abstractions, the definition of a protection zone within the watershed upstream of the intakes is based on the identification of flows (slide, drainage, ditches, alluvial and river exchanges) and the identification, by territorial diagnosis, of agricultural pressures and areas likely to play the most important role in the degradation of the water resource.
