The Natural Areas of Wildlife and Florist Ecological Interest (ZNIEFF) are a national inventory of natural heritage. Its objective is to identify and describe areas with high biological capacity and good conservation status. There are 2 types of ZNIEFF:
— type I ZNIEFFs: areas of great biological or ecological interest;
— type II ZNIEFFs: large, rich and unmodified natural ensembles, offering significant biological potential.
A first inventory was initiated in the 1980s and its results for Languedoc-Roussillon-Midi-Pyrénées were published in 1989.
Since then, naturalistic and scientific knowledge has progressed.
The territory has been modified either naturally or as a result of human activities (agricultural or forestry practices, urbanisation or new infrastructure, etc.).
Similarly, the perception of natural environments by environmental actors has changed.
Aware of the need for better knowledge and consideration of our natural resources, the Ministry responsible for the environment has initiated an update of the ZNIEFF inventory.
Beyond a simple update, this update is based on a new methodology, proposed by the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), which is based in particular on a more rigorous scientific justification of the ZNIEFFs and their delimitations.
The Regional Scientific Council for Natural Heritage (RSNC) is responsible for the scientific validation of this programme at regional level.
The National Museum of Natural History (MNHN) ensures its validation at the national level.
