When their functionalities have been disrupted or impaired by anthropogenic practices (drainage, embankment, urbanisation, settlement, cultivation, etc.), we speak of altered or degraded wetlands.
Former wetlands are areas that in the past have been wet but no longer have the characteristics of an effective wetland.
These are areas that have been significantly modified (e.g. very old drainage, filling, major changes in water circulation, etc.).
Historical wetlands are also referred to. (source: AESN toolbox)
