The European “nitrates” Directive of 12 December 1991 is the main regulatory instrument for combating pollution related to nitrogen from agricultural sources. It concerns nitrogen in all its forms, from all sources (chemical fertilisers, livestock manure, agri-food effluents, sludge, etc.) and all water (terrain, surface, coastal, etc.).
Its implementation in Haute-Normandie is reflected in the preparation of the 5th regional programme defined by prefectural decree of 28 May 2014, and its update of 31 October 2014.
One of the recommended measures is the preservation of areas declared in grassland in 2013, included in wetlands identified for their positive role in denitrification. The location in wetlands of islands where at least 50 % of the surface is grass is the subject of this data.
