A biotope protection area is part of the protected natural areas (ENP) which are designated or managed in an international, Community, national or local framework with a view to achieving specific objectives for the conservation of the natural heritage. The biotope protection area is intended to conserve the habitat of protected species. It is a regulatory protection tool at the departmental level, the implementation of which is relatively flexible. It is one of the priority protected areas of the Protected Areas Strategy (SCAP) and is classified as IUCN Category IV as a management area. Most biotope protection areas are monitored either directly through a committee under the authority of the Prefect or indirectly through schemes such as Natura 2000 and through local ownership. In the case of a biotope protection order defining several areas where separate rules apply (e.g.: rivers on the one hand and watershed on the other), the geometry to be used to map the protection area corresponds to the largest geographical envelope.
