In France, pursuant to Article L. 113-1 [archive] of the Urban Planning Code, local planning plans (PLU) may classify woods, forests, parks, isolated trees, hedges and plantations of alignment as wooded areas to be conserved, protected or created (EBC). Classified Woodland Classification (CCS) prohibits changes in land use or land use patterns that would compromise the conservation, protection or creation of afforestation.
Classification as an EBC entails the automatic rejection of applications for clearance authorisation provided for in the Forestry Code, and the creation of an administrative declaration system before any logging and felling of trees (deletion of the authorisation scheme on 01/10/2007).
