Dataset description

In response to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, the Water and Aquatic Environments Act of 30/12/06 strengthened the control of diffuse pollution of agricultural origin through the creation of zones for the protection of catchment feeding areas. The implementation of this new resource protection system leads to the delimitation of catchment feeding areas (AAFCs, sometimes also referred to as catchment feeding basins or LACs) that include AAFC protection areas. For surface water abstraction, the AAFC is the sub-basin upstream of the water intake. For groundwater, a common methodology for delimiting AAFCs at the national level has been proposed. Under the law of the methodological guide produced, the feeding basin of an underground catchment is defined as the place of the points of the soil surface that contribute to the feeding of the catchment. Some catchment feeding areas are identified as priorities in the Master Water Management and Management Plans (SDAGEs) and measurement programmes. An AAFC is thus defined, after a technical study, as the area from which the water supplying one catchment or several close catches originates. Therefore, it is proposed to include the relevant AAC identifier among the attributes of the data standard locating drinking water sampling points.
