Launched in 1982, the inventory of Natural Areas of Faunistic and Floristic Ecological Interest (ZNIEFF) aims to identify and describe areas with remarkable elements of natural heritage.
There are 2 types of ZNIEFF:
type I ZNIEFFs: areas of great biological or ecological interest;
type II ZNIEFFs: large, rich and unmodified natural ensembles, offering functional integrity and important biological potentialities.
The ZNIEFF inventory covers the entire French territory (metropoleet Outre-Mer, continental and marine environment).
It is a scientific inventory and a tool for knowledge of regional biodiversity, with no direct legal implications. Zoning is defined in 1/25 000, which allows an initial approach to the environmental issues of a territory. It can be consulted in the context of development projects such as urban planning documents, creation of protected areas, development of departmental career schemes, etc., and must be supplemented if necessary by detailed studies depending on the project.
The inventory shall be the subject of periodic updates which, in particular, make it possible to integrate the foreground, and may concern the cartographic delimitation and/or the content of the description sheet.
