The RAMSAR Convention applies to wetlands, i.e. areas of marshes, fens, peatlands, natural or artificial, permanent or temporary waters, where the water is stagnant or running, sweet, brackish or salty, including bodies of marine water with a depth at low tide not exceeding six metres. The wetlands concerned must be of international importance from an ecological, botanical, zoological, limnological or hydrological point of view. The Ramsar Convention (Iran) was signed on 2 February 1971 and ratified in France in 1986 Decree No. 87-126 of 20 February 1987 recalls the primary role of wetlands as habitat for waterbirds.
