The implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) has led to a major change in surface water measurement systems. The DCE networks build on existing, strengthened and adjusted networks to monitor the evolution of water conditions, the efficiency of SDAGEs at basin level, and to report back to Europe.
Five main types of networks:
— a network of reference sites, designed to define “good environmental status” according to the hydroecological zone,
— a monitoring monitoring network to provide a national overview of the status of river quality,
— an operational monitoring network to define the state of the sectors that are at risk of not meeting the quality criteria in 2015 and to monitor its evolution as a result of the actions undertaken, with monitoring focusing on the parameter(s) causing the degradation,
— an investigation control network which will be set up when the causes of failure to achieve good condition are not known in a certain way,
— an additional monitoring network which will provide additional monitoring in the specific areas to be protected
