This dataset contains the wetlands (surface objects) of New Aquitaine.
PLEASE NOTE: this dataset is not exhaustive on the perimeter of New Aquitaine, it concerns the perimeter of the former Limousin region.
Wetland under the Water Act (1992): ‘wetland’ means land, whether or not exploited, usually flooded or swept with fresh water, salted or brackish on a permanent or temporary basis; vegetation, where it exists, is dominated by hygrophilic plants for at least part of the year.
The criteria for defining the delimitation of wetlands have been specified in the Ministerial Orders of 24/06/2008 and 01/10/2009.
The wetlands present in ex-Limousin are of great diversity.
For the sake of simplification, they have been grouped into 18 main types. This grouping was carried out by intersecting physionomical (vegetative aspect) and phytosociological (plant composition of vegetation) information. These two criteria are essential and allow for a concrete approach to the wetland.
Attention, early determination, taking into account only physiognomy, for example, may lead to an error in habitat identification. This is particularly true in the case of vegetation dominated by the diffuse Jonc (Juncus effusus). The same physionomy can be found in different phytosociological groups.
