Le Sanctuaire Pelagos, créé en 1999, est un espace maritime faisant l’objet d’un Accord entre l’Italie, Monaco et la France pour la protection des mammifères marins qui le fréquentent et de leurs habitats contre toutes les causes de perturbations provenant des activités humaines. Du côté français, le ministère chargé de la Transition Ecologique et Solidaire a confié l'animation du Sanstuaire au Parc national de Port-Cros.
