In the framework of the agreement signed with Onema, Irstea carried out, after four years of research, a national mapping showing different reference flows. This is the five-yearly dry monthly flow rate (QMNA5, minimum occurring on average once every five years) and the average inter-annual flow rate (“module”, QA)
Mapping of reference characteristic flow rates (QMNA5: monthly flow rate five-year dry, and module rated QA: average interannual flow) is the result of a spatial interpolation work. The proposed values have no regulatory scope unless they are validated on a case-by-case basis by the water police for specific cases.
It is based on a national methodology using several models and reflects the state of knowledge at the end of 2012. However, it contains errors, the origins of which can be multiple: imperfection of methods, biased data, complexity of local hydrologies, human-related disturbances, inconsistency in the layout of the hydrographic network and of certain HYDRO sub-areas, etc. It is not intended to replace more precise locally constituted estimates, to which reference should be made as a matter of priority when they exist. The mapping tool was therefore designed to provide decision support.
