French seismic zoning in force from 1 May 2011 is defined in Decrees Nos 2010-1254 and 2010-1255 of 22 October 2010, codified in articles R.563-1 to 8 and D.563-8-1 of the Environmental Code. This zoning, based on a probabilistic analysis of the hazard, divides France into 5 zones of increasing seismicity based on communal division:
— zone 1: very low seismicity
— zone 2: low seismicity
— zone 3: moderate seismicity
— zone 4: average seismicity
— zone 5: strong seismicity.
Vienna is affected by seismicity zones 2 (low) and 3 (moderate).
With the new zoning, new regulations lay down seismic construction rules:
— seismicity zone 1: No specific seismic requirement for buildings at normal risk (the seismic hazard associated with this area is described as very low),
— seismicity zones 2 to 5: seismic construction rules apply to new buildings and old buildings under special conditions.
