The Law of 27 February 2002 known as proximity democracy established the census of “geological, mineralogical and paleontological richness... of the national land, river and sea territory”. It therefore imposed the establishment of a National Inventory of Geological Heritage (INPG). This inventory was officially launched in 2007 by the Ministry of the Environment and is under the scientific responsibility of the MNHN (National Museum of Natural History). For this purpose, a precise method has been developed*. It gives the possibility to describe sites of French geological interest in “fiches” and to prioritise them according to two main notations: the Heritage Interest Note (NIP) and the Need for Protection Note (NBP).
Once drafted, the “fiches” are validated at two levels: regional level by the Regional Scientific Council for Natural Heritage (CSRPN) and at national level by the National Validation Commission (CNV)
