The Dominante Humid Zones (DHZs) are qualified as follows:
— this is all permanent water surfaces extracted from BdOCS2008-CIGAL: rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, artificial basins;
and
— all areas with wetland characteristics identified by the interpretation of source and exogenous data, using an established method, based on soil hydromorphy, topography and vegetation.
The geographical database of the Wet Dominant Areas was created by photo-interpretation of the Ortho IGN (a 2007 cover on the Alsace Region, a 2004 cover on the Parc des Vosges du Nord and one from 2001 to 2003 on the Parc des Ballons des Vosges) and SPOT5 images (two complete covers, one from 7/Oct 2007 and the other from March/May 2008) across all study territories.
The definition of HRAs is based on the definition of wetlands in the Ministerial Order of the Water Framework Directive, Article L.211-1 "Wetlands are land, whether or not operated, usually flooded or swept with fresh water, salty or brackish on a temporary or permanent basis. Vegetation, where it exists, is dominated by hygrophilic plants for at least part of the year" and the Order of 24 June 2008 as amended "specifying the criteria for the definition and delimitation of wetlands pursuant to Articles L.214-7-1 and R. 211-108 of the Environmental Code”.
