A vulnerable area is a part of the territory where water pollution by direct or indirect discharge of nitrates of agricultural origin and other nitrogen compounds that may become nitrates threatens in the short term the quality of aquatic environments and, in particular, the supply of drinking water.
In vulnerable areas, quadrennial action programmes are adopted by the Regional Prefects in order to limit the spread of nitrogen compounds in the waters.
Vulnerable areas are defined at the level of each major catchment area, namely the Adour-Garonne, Rhône-Méditerranée and Loire-Bretagne basins. The Occitania region does not currently include vulnerable areas defined under the Loire-Bretagne basin.
