Perimeters of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) belonging to the European Natura 2000 network
The Natura 2000 network comprises 2 types of regulatory areas: special Protection Areas (SPAs) and Special Conservation Areas (SACs).
The Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) aim at the conservation of the habitat types and animal and plant species listed in Annexes I and II to the European Habitats Directive of 21/05/1992.
In order to designate the SACs, each Member State shall submit its proposals to the European Commission in the form of a pSIC (proposal for a Community Interest Site). After approval by the Commission, the PSIC is listed as a Site of Community Interest (SIC) for the European Union and is integrated into the Natura 2000 network. A ministerial order then designates the site as a SAC.
