A regional nature park is part of the protected natural areas (ENP) which are designated or managed in an international, Community, national or local framework with a view to achieving specific objectives for the conservation of the natural heritage. The aim of regional nature parks is to develop vast areas of great cultural and natural interest and to ensure the sustainable development of these areas, whose rural character is often very strong. They are created as a result of the desire of local and regional authorities (communities, communes, departments, regions) to implement a territorial project which will be implemented by the drafting of a charter. A park is labelled for a maximum of 12 years by the state, and can be renewed. It is classified as IUCN Category V (protected landscapes). A regional nature park may concern several regions and extend at sea.
