Remarkable wetlands are wetlands with exceptional biodiversity. They correspond to wetlands included in inventories of sensitive natural areas* of at least departmental interest note, or failing that, natural areas of floristic and faunistic ecological interest (ZNIEFF)*, Natura 2000 areas* or areas concerned by a biotope protection order* and still have a minimum biological status and functioning. Their membership in these areas or inventories gives them their characteristic of a remarkable wetland. They require detailed inventories. The latter are already initiated but still incomplete.
So-called remarkable areas have been identified in the Rhine-Meuse basin and are priorities for conservation actions. They represent 35 000 ha, i.e. 4.2 % of the area of the basin divided into:
40 % of humid forests;
35 % wet grassland;
18 % ponds and ponds;
6 % of marshes and peatlands.
