The short-circuited stretch of a watercourse is the part between the water intake (the dam) and the return (the power plant). The flow rate of the short-circuited section is artificially reduced, sometimes drastically; it corresponds to the natural flow less the flow derived by the plant and represents, depending on the case, 1/10th or 1/40th of the average flow of the river. This flow rate left in the short-circuited section is called the reserved flow rate.
