Land transport infrastructure is categorised into 5 categories according to the level of noise they generate, with category 1 being the noisest. An area affected by noise is defined on either side of the outer edge of the roadway, or of the outside rail, of each classified infrastructure.
In the department of Hérault, the Préfet carried out a review of the sound classification of infrastructures with six prefectoral decrees on 21 May 2014. This includes motorways, land transport infrastructure crossing the municipalities of more than 10,000 inhabitants, less than 10 000 inhabitants for the districts of Montpellier, Béziers, Lodève and the tramway lines of the Montpellier agglomeration.
Currently, the Hérault department has 7 prefectural sound classification orders: 6 above and one approved on 1 June 2007. Order No 2007/01/1064 of 1 June 2007 on the sound classification of railways and tramway lines in the department of Héault remains applicable to its articles concerning the sound classification of railway tracks. The revision of the latter is postponed to a later date, with an ex RFF network SNCF procedure at the regional level Languedoc Roussillon to be implemented.
