The delimitation of areas vulnerable to pollution by nitrates of agricultural origin was made within the framework of Decree No 93-1038 of 27 August 1993, transcribing into French law Directive 91/676/EEC.
This delimitation, prepared in each department and in each region by working groups, involving various departments and bodies concerned as well as representatives of the agricultural profession, s' builds on the acquired knowledge of the nitrate levels of tablecloths and rivers, as well as on the levels observed at #x27; occasion of various monitoring campaigns on a monitoring network set up for this purpose.
The zone vulnerable to pollution of nitrates; agricultural origin, was updated in 2015 for Languedoc-Roussillon with the signature by the Prefets of basins Rhône Méditerranée Corse and Adour Garonne of the delimitation decrees.
Areas designated as vulnerable; diffuse pollution by nitrates of agricultural origin, taking into account in particular the characteristics of land and water as well as all available data on the nitrate content of water and their feeding zone, shall concern:
— waters affected by pollution: groundwater and surface fresh water, in particular those used for the abstraction of water intended for human consumption, with a nitrate content exceeding 50 milligrams per litre; estuary, coastal and marine waters and surface fresh waters which have undergone eutrophication which can be effectively combated by reducing nitrogen inputs.
— waters threatened by pollution: groundwater and surface fresh water, in particular those used for the abstraction of water intended for human consumption, with a nitrate content of between 40 and 50 milligrams per litre and shows an upward trend; estuary, coastal and marine waters and surface fresh waters, the main characteristics of which show a tendency towards eutrophication that can be effectively combated by reducing nitrogen inputs.
