Maintaining France’s rank among the major sports nations is an important axis of the state’s sporting policy that requires good results at international sporting events.
In order to promote the good results of French athletes in international sports competitions, the Ministry of Sports develops a social monitoring policy so that high-level athletes can achieve performance up to their potential, while guaranteeing them the continuation of training and professional integration corresponding to their abilities and aspirations.
High-level sport is based on well-established criteria which are:
recognition of the high-level character of sports disciplines;
reference competitions;
the list of high-level athletes;
the paths of sporting excellence.
The Minister responsible for sports shall, in the light of the proposals of the federations and after consulting the National High-Level Sport Commission, adopt the list of high-level athletes. This list contains 6 categories of athletes:
— Senior;
— Elite;
Hope;
— Young person;
— Training partner;
— Conversion.
The dataset ‘list of athletes included in the list of high-level athletes (SHNs) in 2016’ corresponds to that list adopted by the Ministry responsible for sports for 2016. It is also possible to query the database from the web page http://sports.gouv.fr/pratiques-sportives/sport-performance/Sport-de-haut-niveau/article/Liste-des-sportifs-de-haut-niveau
