Avignon — Participative Vegetation

Place of implementation of participatory planting. ====================== The city of Avignon, through the operation “Avignon, Vegetation Together Our Public Spaces”, wishes to involve the population concretely in this project to enhance the daily living environment in all the neighborhoods of the city, thus giving the inhabitants the opportunity to plant in front of them with the technical support and written authorisation of the municipality. On September 30, 2015, the City voted for a deliberation in favour of the planting of public spaces, proposing a convention that defines the role, responsibility and obligations of each of the actors involved in this process, while specifying the organisation and techniques used. For several years, this desire to share public space has been exemplified in many cities, abroad as well as in France, particularly in those of Paris, Montreuil, Bordeaux and a few others, each time giving rise to a solidarity, creative and user-friendly impetus retracting the social bond. These initiatives are based on a simple but still innovative idea: trust the inhabitants by delegating the management of plants planted in public space, with commitments respecting the broad lines of an environmental charter adopted by cities. Wherever they have been implemented, these green spaces have a multifunctional role in urban areas: to enable the creation of social ties and cultural diversity, to promote local citizens’ projects, to develop environmental education. We find in this data set all of the sites whose status is “completed”.
