Dataset description

Since 2000, ADEME has initiated a barometer on the **social representations of climate change**. This survey makes it possible to draw up a picture and measure the changes in the place of the environment in the concerns of the French, the representations of the causes and consequences of climate change, the opinion on the solutions and measures of public policies, as well as individual commitment. You will find here **the database of the 22 waves of this barometer from 2000 to 2021**. The sample consisted of approximately 1000 respondents up to the 14th wave and about 1500 respondents for subsequent years. The base of the 22 waves therefore has a total workforce of 26,293 respondents. The survey is administered by sampling each year of a representative sample of the French population aged 15 years and over using the quota method (sex, age, socio-occupational category, category of agglomeration and region of residence). From the origins up to the year 2013 the method of handing out the questionnaire was the telephone. The general evolution of survey techniques towards so-called “online” surveys, i.e. panels of Internet users, was decided in 2013 following an experiment in which the same questionnaire was administered for comparison on the one hand by a telephone survey on the other by an online survey. The questionnaires for these surveys are designed by ADEME with the help of a service provider (RCB consulting, Daniel Boy). The surveys are then technically implemented in the field by a survey institute (Opinion Way since 2014, GFK ISL for the first editions). The annual survey usually takes place at the end of June and early July. To help you use the data, we make available to you in addition to the database, [the questionnaire of the last wave carried out in 2021](https://koumoul.com/data-fair/api/v1/datasets/barometre-representations-sociales-du-changement-climatique/metadata-attachments/Barometre%20changement%20climatique_Vague%2022%20_Questionnaire%20GP_2021_base%20donnees.docx) and a [data dictionary](https://koumoul.com/data-fair/api/v1/datasets/barometre-representations-sociales-du-changement-climatique/metadata-attachments/Barometre-representations-sociales-Changement-Climatique_Dictionnaire.docx). One of the constants of these surveys is to strike a balance between the primary need to allow comparisons of the answers of the public over time, an imperative which leads to the strict retention of the same wording of questions, and the need to test new questions, due to possible changes in the problems of these surveys. These two imperatives must comply with the obligation not to exceed a certain overall volume of questions and therefore a procurement time that is not excessive for respondents. To test the extent to which the weight of words may have induced a particular response, the technique of the shared file was often used in these surveys: the same question is to split the sample into two groups of the same size, one to which one question is worded with a first formulation and the other with an alternative formulation. Thus, you will find some questions in the database that no longer appear in the questionnaire, and questions in the questionnaire that are not in the database, as their introduction has been considered too recent to include them here. Each year the standard survey of the general public is supplemented by an over-sample to give a view of a target audience. This database concerns only the basic survey of the general public and does not include these annual over-samples.
