The AFB, together with Irstea, defined a reference network for the monitoring of drawdowns by selecting 250 hydrometric stations of the Hydro Bank (including 14 overseas) little influenced by human activities.
This network has made it possible to highlight a clear downward trend in surface water resources over the last 40 years, with a worsening of stretches in particular in the southern half of France.
Although these trends are significant, they cannot be directly attributed to climate change. Indeed, the multi-decadal natural oscillations of the climate can potentially explain some of the observed evolutions.
The analysis of climatic oscillations highlights in particular the following elements:
— it is possible that some of the temporal trends detected on the severity of the lows may be due to climatic oscillations;
— on the other hand, it seems that the observed seasonality trends (beginning, center, end, duration) are not due to climatic oscillations but rather to climate change.
