The BnF maintains one of the world’s largest collections of bindings that needed to be improved in order to promote its study and knowledge. The site rebinures.bnf.fr thus highlights descriptive notices of bindings that were hitherto not accessible to a large public. At first, it was the description of French bindings with decoration covering the period from the beginning of the 16th century to the beginning of the 19th century that was privileged. The site was built from the environment of data.bnf.fr. It allows the aggregation of data present in the General Catalogue of the BnF, digitised representations of bindings hosted in Gallica and in anticipation of the data of the catalogue BnF Archives and Manuscrits. These data are enriched with descriptions, scientific and complete bindings as well as related historical data (binding workshops and provenances). The data presented in the site is based on advanced technologies and existing international standards — such as the TEI BnF binding scheme — which promotes their interoperability. Finally, the site offers a suitable research environment.
