The objectives of the population census are to enumerate the dwellings and population residing in France and to understand their main characteristics: gender, age, activity, occupations, household characteristics, size and type of housing. Established in 1801, the census took place every 5 years until 1936. The information collected is of interest to local and regional authorities, government departments and companies, sociologists, urban planners, etc.
