Within the framework of the agreement signed with Onema, Irstea carried out, after four years of research, a national mapping with different reference flows. These are the monthly five-year dry flow rate (QMNA5, minimum occurring on average once every five years) and the interannual average flow (“module”, QA)
Mapping of characteristic reference flow rates (QMNA5: monthly dry five-year flow, and QA-rated module: interannual average flow) is the result of spatial interpolation work. The proposed values have no regulatory scopes unless they are validated on a case-by-case basis by the water police for specific records.
It is based on a multi-model national methodology and reflects the state of knowledge at the end of 2012. However, it contains errors with multiple origins: imperfection of methods, biased data, complexity of local hydrologies, human-related disturbances, inconsistency in the layout of the hydrographic network and certain HYDRO sub-areas, etc. It is not intended to replace more accurate locally constituted estimates, which should be referred as a priority when they exist. The mapping tool was therefore designed to provide decision support.
