Clay removal/swelling zones — Rhône

Clay removal/swelling zones on the Rhône department __Origin__ Origin of data: B.R.G.M. &Study: — establishment of a synthetic departmental mapping of formations with predominantly clay or marsey, outcropping to sub-cropping, from geological maps, — prioritisation of the 30 identified formations as regards their susceptibility to the phenomenon of withdrawal-swelling. The classification was based on three main criteria: the lithological characterisation of the formation, the mineralogical composition of its clay phase and its geotechnical behavior. — drawing up a departmental map of susceptibility to the phenomenon of withdrawal-swelling, — establishment of the map d'aira from the susceptibility map and the probability of occurrence of the phenomenon. The latter was evaluated on the basis of the claims census by calculating, for each selected formation, a density of claims, reported to the outcropping area actually urbanised.
