A biotope protection area is one of the protected natural areas (ENPs) that are designated or managed within an international, Community, national or local framework with a view to achieving specific natural heritage conservation objectives.
The biotope protection area is designed to conserve the habitat of protected species. It is a departmental-level regulatory protection tool, the implementation of which is relatively flexible. It is one of the protected areas under the Protected Areas Strategy (SCAP) and is classified as IUCN Category IV as a management area. Most biotope protection areas are monitored either directly through a committee under the prefect’s authority or indirectly within the framework of schemes such as Natura 2000 and through local ownership.
In the case of a biotope protection order defining several areas where separate rules apply (e.g.: on the one hand and watershed on the other), the geometry to be used to map the protection area corresponds to the largest geographical envelope.
