In 2016, TMNLab published the [Statement of Digital Theatres](https://www.data.gouv.fr/fr/datasets/etat-des-lieux-du-numerique-dans-les-theatres-en-france/), a national survey supported by the Ministry of Culture. This inventory of digital practices covered relations with the public, communication, the organisation of work (technical means, organisation chart, training) and the strategic vision of the institutions, with public and private theatres in France. While this work remained a reference for professionals in the sector, the evolution of usages and practices but also the development of new opportunities called for a new edition. It’s done. Nearly 550 structures — theatres, operas, contemporary music scenes, circus poles, choreographic centers, festivals, cabarets, places of visual art...
For example, in 2021, TMNLab continues to reflect and updates its baseline.
Digital challenges have evolved too strongly in five years to allow a simple update of the 2016 figures to capture the reality of the changes made. TMNLab then builds a questionnaire to further understand how cultural structures integrate digital challenges, tools and uses around three axes:
— “project and organisation” where digitalisation is addressed in the establishment project but also vis-à-vis teams and programming
— “address to the public” where we analyse communication and mediation in particular.
— “data policy” within the structure.
The Eye of the Public, an independent research and advisory agency specialised in the cultural sector, is tasked to carry out this new investigation. By designing a new format for the return of the survey, the designers of the BAM collective propose a reflexive, operational and interactive tool, which will evolve with the work of the network.
