__Origin__
The territory of the Lower Champs of the South of the Bay of Somme, constitutes an area protected from the sea by a cord of pebbles. Much of this land gained over the sea by polders is located a few meters below the level of the open seas of live water. Insufficiently fed, the cord has suffered severe erosion for a century and the grounds of the Lower Fields were flooded during breaks of the pebble dam as a result of heavy storms. The means of defence against the sea, implemented since 1960, combine the installation of spikes along the cord and reloading in pebbles in lockers. Following the flooding of February 1990, a new phase of work was carried out to stabilise the dam. It was completed in 2015. The dam is therefore currently protected by a battery of ears from Ault-Onival to the south of Cayeux. However, this situation is still fragile, because although the dike is maintained, the territory of the Lower Champs is still vulnerable to coastal risks. In order to manage them, the establishment of a Natural Risk Prevention Plan was prescribed by the Somme Prefecture on February 8, 2007.
