Dataset description

The file of first names is drawn up by INSEE on the basis of the only birth certificates of persons born in France (metropolicy and overseas departments outside Mayotte). As a result, completeness is not guaranteed over the entire period, in particular for the years prior to 1946. Users will therefore be able to see deviations from the annual number of births assessed by INSEE. These differences, which are significant at the beginning of the period, are decreasing. After 1946, they were insignificant. The information contained in the file of first names is based on the civil status bulletins transmitted to INSEE by the civil registry officers of the municipalities. These bulletins are themselves drawn up on the basis of the statements of the parents. INSEE cannot guarantee that the first names file is free from omissions or errors. The [recast of the electoral process](https://www.insee.fr/fr/information/3539086) resulted in a higher number of corrections in the first names database than in previous years. Indeed, each elector is now registered in the single electoral register with his/her official civil status (the [National Register of Identification of Natural Persons/RNIPP](https://www.insee.fr/fr/metadonnees/definition/c1602)), so anomalies have been co-founded. **To understand** For each given name, for each year of birth (from 1900 to 2020), each department and each sex, the number of persons registered in the civil status under that first name is given. **Persons taken into account** The field covers all persons born in France outside Mayotte and registered in civil status on birth certificates. People born abroad are excluded. **The field of first names selected** In the civil status files, in this case the birth certificates, the different first names are separated by a space (or white). Thus two first names separated by a dash constitute a single compound first name (example: Anne-Laure). The first single or compound first name appears at the beginning of the list, and it is the first name that will be retained after the protection of anonymity has been processed. **Conditions relating to the first names selected** * For the period 1900 to 1945, the first name was given at least 20 times to females and/or at least 20 times to males. * For the period 1946 to 2020, the first name was given at least 20 times to females and/or at least 20 times to males * For a given year of birth, the first name has been given at least 3 times to females or males The numbers of first names not meeting conditions 1 and 2 are grouped (for each sex and year of birth) in a record whose “first name” field is “_PRENOMS_RARES_”. The numbers of first names fulfilling the second condition but not the third condition 3 are grouped (for each sex and first name) in a registration whose birth_year field is “XXXX”. **Precision for the Department of Birth** Over the whole period, the birth department (variables “dep_code” and “dep_name”) is the one existing at the time of birth. A person born in Issy-les-Moulineaux in 1949 will be coded in 75 (Seine), and a person born in 1971 in Issy-les-Moulineaux will be coded in 92 (Hauts-de-Seine). By Law No 64-707 of 10/07/1964, departments 75 (Paris), 78 (Yvelines), 91 (Essonne), 92 (Hauts-de-Seine), 93 (Seine-Saint-Denis), 94 (Val-de-Marne) and 95 (Val-d’Oise) were created, starting from the former departments 75 (Seine) and 78 (Seine-et-Oise), with an effective date in the file on 1 January 1968. A code grouping was done for the variable “dep_code” * the code “dep_code=20” is used for births in the two departments 2A (South Corsica) and 2B (Haute-Corse); **Sources** These files come from [civil status](https://www.insee.fr/fr/metadonnees/source/s1170), aggregated by INSEE. **Enrichment** * Addition of department names (“dep_name”), names and region codes (reg_name and “reg_code respectively”).
