In 2012 the United Nations Rio+ 20 Conference on Sustainable Development was held. The UN Secretary-General and the Rio+ 20 Declaration called for the definition of universal goals, integrating in a balanced manner the economic, environmental and social components of sustainable development.
17 Sustainable Development Goals 2015-2020 (SDGs) were adopted at the UN General Assembly in September 2015 and entered into force on 1 January 2016. They are articulated into 169 targets. The SDGs succeed in a single agenda for the expired Millennium Development Goals 2000-2015.
