The legal protection and regulation of wildlife is one of the key elements of France’s biodiversity conservation policy. However, between the number of texts and the taxonomic gap between these texts and scientific knowledge, it is often difficult to use these statutes in knowledge bases dedicated to territories. To try to remedy this, the Museum offers for download on its website the National Inventory of Natural Heritage tables gathering this information in conjunction with the national repository TAXREF.
The methodology adopted for drawing up these lists is presented by Gargominy & Demonet (2013), first of all with regard to the choice of texts dealt with: completeness on protections and near-completeness on other regulations such as the introduction ban. Then on the methods used to interpret the official texts in conjunction with the national repository. This document also updates some problems with the taxonomic interpretation of legal texts. With 142 listed legal texts generating more than 60,000 taxa with status, it becomes possible to use this legal information in the many nature information systems.
