Underground quarries are ancient underground construction stone mining works.
They can pose serious threats to people and property, due to a risk of collapse.
Very numerous in Gironde, underground quarries are mainly located in Entre-Deux-Mers, Bourgeais, Cubzacais, Fronsadais, Libournais and Sauternais.
To date, nearly 1,400 underground quarries have been recorded in the department.
Most are in the state of abandonment or ruin.
The General Council takes care to identify and delimit all existing underground quarries, in order to better define the security measures to be applied.
The Directorate of Infrastructure is responsible for the security of the departmental road affected by underground quarries over a total of 25 km, with more than 110 sections of under-caved roads scattered above the roadway of the department.
