A protected geographical indication (PGI) means a product the characteristics of which are linked to the geographical place in which at least its production or processing takes place under well-defined conditions. It is a European sign that protects the name of the product throughout the European Union.
The PGI was created in 1992 as part of the European quality policy for agricultural and food products. In France, the management of this official sign (adoption of specifications in particular) is entrusted to the National Institute of Origin and Quality (INAO).
