The Natura 2000 network comprises two types of regulatory areas: special Protection Areas (SPAs) and Community Importance Sites (SICs).
SPAs are designated from the Inventory of Important Bird Conservation Areas (IBAs) as defined by European Directive 79/409/EEC of 25/4/1979 on the conservation of wild birds.
SCIs are defined by the European Directive of 21/05/1992 on the conservation of natural habitats
A site “proposed” will successively be a proposal for a site of Community Importance (pSIC), then a SCI after designation by the European Commission, finally a Special Area of Conservation (SZC) after decree of the Minister for the Environment.
