The Natural Areas of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest are set up by the National Natural Heritage Inventory (INPN) on behalf of the Museum of Natural History. It is not a legal mechanism but rather a tool of scientific knowledge to protect the environment. Forests, ponds and forest plots may be affected by this scheme. Type 1 ZNIEFFs are areas of great biological or ecological interest.
