A regional nature park is one of the protected nature areas (NPEs) which are designated or managed in an international, Community, national or local context with a view to achieving specific natural heritage conservation objectives. The aim of regional nature parks is to develop large areas of great cultural and natural interest and to ensure the sustainable development of these areas, which are often highly rural. They are created as a result of the desire of local and regional authorities (municipalities, communities of municipalities, departments, regions) to implement a territorial project resulting in the drafting of a charter. A park is labelled for a maximum of 12 years by the State and may be renewed. It is classified as IUCN category V (protected landscapes). A regional nature park may affect several regions and extend at sea.
