As part of its policy for the operation, maintenance and development of departmental roads, the Calvados Department prioritised its road network in a geographical reference framework in 2008, taking into account, in particular, traffic and the main socio-economic axes. The departmental road network is divided into 1st category, 2nd category, intercantonal network, local network.
The membership of a road in a category determines the type of management, maintenance, work to be applied to it: repairs, mowing of shoulders, winter viability, signage, safety improvements...
**Collection context**
Since 2002, the Department of Calvados has operated a Geographic Information System (GIS) with a road component. All information relating to the management of the departmental public road domain is provided via the Department’s Road Geographic Information System (SIGR).
The road graph is digitised from departmental orthophotos.
The latest road graph updates were made from the 2020 IGN orthophoto.

The technical teams of the Department of Calvados are updating the layout of departmental roads in the Road Geographic Information System (SIGR), following the creation of new sections and developments in the departmental territory.
