In order to preserve Girondine nature (watercourses, wetlands, animal and plant species, geological heritage, etc.), the General Council conducts a proactive environmental policy. Preserving the natural heritage In order to preserve Girondine nature (watercourses, wetlands, animal and plant species, geological heritage, etc.), the General Council conducts a proactive environmental policy. It acts in two ways: As a contracting authority; As a support to local actors (communities, associations), committed to the preservation of their natural heritage. This action comes in compensation for the urbanisation of the territory, and it is financed by the former departmental tax of sensitive natural areas (TDENS), now renamed development tax (TA), levied on building permits. The General Council may acquire, assist local authorities in acquiring, parcels under Sensitive Natural Spaces (ENS).
