Preserving the natural heritage In order to preserve Girondine nature (watercourses, wetlands, animal and plant species, geological heritage, etc.), the General Council conducts a proactive environmental policy. It acts in two ways: As a contracting authority; As a support to local actors (communities, associations), committed to the preservation of their natural heritage. This action comes in compensation for the urbanisation of the territory, and it is financed by the former departmental tax of sensitive natural areas (TDENS), now renamed development tax (TA), levied on building permits. The General Council may acquire, assist local authorities in acquiring, parcels under Sensitive Natural Spaces (ENS). These lands are therefore protected from all construction projects and open to the public. The list of these acquisitions is presented in the files associated with this dataset
