The date of the last update on the INPN site is December 2019. a nature reserve and its associated protection zone are part of the protected nature areas (NPEs) which are designated or managed in an international, Community, national or local context in order to achieve specific heritage conservation objectives. a regional nature reserve is a protected area created at the initiative of a region and whose natural heritage is exceptional. Classification as a regional nature reserve also pursues the objective of protecting remarkable natural environments. It is classified as IUCN categories Ia, III or V (according to the regulations and management objectives established).A regional nature reserve may benefit from an additional ‘buffer zone’ area protected by that scheme. Depending on the case, a distinction is made between the sensu protection areas strictly adopted by prefectoral order and the protection zones defined by decree. The areas of protection may be broad and defined on the basis of a list of municipalities, particularly in the case of geologic reserves.
