The French living abroad have a very comprehensive mechanism of political representation with elected representatives specifically representing them in national bodies and local elected representatives. They can vote abroad for national elections (presidential, legislative and European elections as well as referendums) and elections for French advisers abroad and consular delegates when they are registered on the consular electoral list.
Following the decision of the Council of State of 24 June 2022 leading to the cancellation of the May 29, 2021 consular election in Canada’s fourth electoral district, including the cities of Montreal, Ottawa and Moncton, a by-election was held there on October 22, 2022.
